Research Reports: 1984 NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program

A NASA/ASEE Summer Faulty Fellowship Program was conducted at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The basic objectives of the programs are: (1) to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; (2) to stimulate an exchange of ideas between participants and NASA; (3) to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of the participants' institutions; and (4) to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA Centers. The Faculty Fellows spent ten weeks at MSFC engaged in a research project compatible with their interests and background and worked in collaboration with a NASA/MSFC colleague. This document is a compilation of Fellows' reports on their research during the summer of 1984. Topics covered include: (1) data base management; (2) computational fluid dynamics; (3) space debris; (4) X-ray gratings; (5) atomic oxygen exposure; (6) protective coatings for SSME; (7) cryogenics; (8) thermal analysis measurements; (9) solar wind modelling; and (10) binary systems

Indirect recharge

Presented at Irrigation and water resources in the 1990's: proceedings from the 1992 national conference held on October 5-7, 1992 in Phoenix, Arizona.The Central Arizona Project is nearing completion and is currently operating in partial capability. Central Arizona finds itself with a plentiful water supply available from the Colorado River but without the physical or economic resources to fully use the supply. The state of agricultural economics is such that irrigation is not profitable using the high cost CAP supply. Yet as we look toward the future, central Arizona can expect shortages of Colorado River supplies 25 to 50 years in the future and short term loss of supply from system outages due to maintenance or unplanned failures. The Central Arizona Water Conservation District, working with the Arizona Department of Water Resources and local irrigation districts, is developing indirect recharge programs to promote present day use of available Colorado River supplies instead of groundwater pumping. At the same time, the programs provide long-term storage for protection against temporary system outages and shortages in long-term supply. While 1992 will be the first year for such programs by CAWCD or anyone in Arizona, we hope it will demonstrate a win-win program for all

Geobase Information System Impacts on Space Image Formats

As Geobase Information Systems increase in number, size and complexity, the format compatability of satellite remote sensing data becomes increasingly more important. Because of the vast and continually increasing quantity of data available from remote sensing systems the utility of these data is increasingly dependent on the degree to which their formats facilitate, or hinder, their incorporation into Geobase Information Systems. To merge satellite data into a geobase system requires that they both have a compatible geographic referencing system. Greater acceptance of satellite data by the user community will be facilitated if the data are in a form which most readily corresponds to existing geobase data structures. The conference addressed a number of specific topics and made recommendations

Contested Development: A Poor People\u27s Movement for a Better Los Angeles, 1960–2018

Zooming in on the historical development of Downtown Los Angeles’s (LA) Skid Row, this dissertation traces a continuity of abolitionist alternatives made by homeless and poor Angelinos from the 1960s to our present day. Skid Row is an important entry way into Los Angeles urban politics, particularly with respect to how forms of difference, at the axis of race, gender, class, and ability shape regional relations of property and the built environment. I show how these relations shape Downtown Los Angeles’s geography through carceral practices. These carceral practices, made by social services and policing, shape space by routinely containing and dispossessing poor residents for the interests of urban renewal and redevelopment. These residents are not idle. They push back, unsettling the development and the carceral manifestation of space. In their resistance, residents produce alternative networks of care, community control, and place through poetry, music, political campaigns, and legal strategies. Throughout the dissertation, I advance the concept of contested development: how forms of spatial difference through regional relations of property are challenged or reproduced. In so doing, Contested Development shows how urban politics for the last seven decades reveals the push-and-pull contradictions of development by way of the carceral manifestations of difference and the abolitionist alternatives to overwrite them
